Zhongzheng: The Best Area to Stay in Taipei for First-Time Visitors

If I had to recommend just one area to stay in Taipei, it would be Zhongzheng. More specifically, the northern part of the district, close to the border with Zhongshan.

Its biggest advantage is location. From here, you can easily reach almost every part of Taipei using the MRT, regional trains, or Taiwan’s High-Speed Rail (HSR). If you’re visiting for just a few days and want to see as much as possible, staying here is incredibly convenient.

Another reason I love this area is that it’s almost perfectly positioned between many of Taipei’s most interesting neighborhoods. In many cases, you can simply walk to places like Zhongshan, Datong, or Ximending in around 20–30 minutes.

Pros: Excellent public transportation connections, easy access to and from the Airport, good selection of hotels for different budgets.

Cons: Some areas feel more business-oriented than residential and not the best neighborhood for nightlife.

Mid-Range: The Blue by Just Inn

Luxury: Hotel Resonance Taipei, Tapestry Collection by Hilton

Da’an: A Peaceful Neighborhood to Experience a Different Side of Taipei

Da’an regularly appears on lists of the best places to stay in Taipei, and it’s easy to see why.

The district offers tree-lined streets, beautiful green spaces, a relaxed atmosphere, and a much more residential feel than many other parts of the city.

It’s an excellent choice for travelers who have already visited large Asian cities and prefer a quieter environment without being too far from Taipei’s main attractions.

Pros: Excellent MRT access, less crowded than the city center and a bit more relaxed and residential atmosphere.

Cons: Less convenient for some day trips and cafés and shops close earlier than in busier districts.

Ximending: Best for Nightlife, Shopping, and Entertainment

Ximending is probably Taipei’s most vibrant and energetic neighborhood. Many travelers compare it to Shibuya in Tokyo thanks to its neon signs, pedestrian streets, shopping opportunities, and lively atmosphere.

If you enjoy being in the middle of the action, this is one of the best areas to stay in Taipei.
You’ll find countless restaurants, cafés, shopping malls, independent boutiques, and hidden alleyways to explore. It’s also one of the city’s most popular nightlife districts.

Pros: Huge variety of food options, excellent nightlife and great shopping opportunities.

Cons: Less authentic than some other neighborhoods, can be noisy and crowded.

Things to Do Near Ximending

  • The Red House
  • Graffiti Street and its photogenic alleyways

Datong: History, Markets, and a More Authentic Taipei

Datong is one of the most fascinating neighborhoods in Taipei for travelers looking to experience a more traditional side of the city.

This district is home to some of Taipei’s oldest markets, historic temples, traditional Chinese medicine shops, and streets that still preserve much of Taiwan’s cultural heritage.
It also features a beautiful riverside area that many visitors overlook.

Pros: Strong local character and traditional markets and historic architecture.

Cons: Fewer hotel options and MRT access is not as convenient as in other neighborhoods.

Things to Do Near Datong:

  • Yanping Riverside Park
  • The famous Pet Temple (No. 57-2, Guide Street)
  • Dihua Street

Xinyi: Taipei’s Modern and Luxury District

If you picture Taipei as a futuristic city filled with skyscrapers, chances are you’re imagining Xinyi.

This is Taipei’s financial district and home to the iconic Taipei 101. Despite its modern appearance, you’ll also find photogenic side streets, local markets, and several hiking trails just minutes away.

Pros: Spectacular skyline views, easy access to hiking trails and modern atmosphere.

Cons: Less local and authentic, significantly more expensive and further away from some attractions.

Things to Do Near Xinyi:

  • Taipei 101.
  • Elephant Mountain and several other hiking trails
  • Shopping malls
  • Tonghua Night Market

my fav coffee shop: Not Just Library (No. 133號, Guangfu S Rd)

My Favorite Hotels in Xinyi:

Budget accommodation is limited in this district; buuuut the Home Hotel is recommended by the Michelin Guide and W Taipei it’s hard to beat the views and rooftop pool.

Yonghe: A Local Alternative for Long-Term Stays

Although Yonghe technically belongs to New Taipei City, it deserves a place on this list.

Compared to central Taipei, the neighborhood feels much more local, offers better value for money, and has some fantastic food options.

It wouldn’t be my first recommendation for someone visiting Taipei for the first time, but it’s an excellent choice for digital nomads, slow travelers, or anyone spending several weeks in Taiwan.

Pros: More affordable accommodation, excellent local food scene and good MRT connections to Taipei.

Cons: Fewer tourist attractions and longer travel times to some sights.

Things to Do Near Yonghe

  • Yonghe Baofu Temple (my favorite temple in Taipei)
  • Le Hua Night Market

my fav coffee shop: 黑雨kuro am (No. 30號, Heping St)

My Favorite Hotel in Yonghe:

In my opinion Fooyee Hotel, the best accommodation option in the area thanks to its location, comfort, and overall value.

Where I Would NOT Stay in Taipei

If it’s your first time visiting Taipei, I would avoid staying too far from a major MRT station.
Trust me, there’s a huge difference between waiting five minutes for the next train and spending thirty minutes just getting to the station. Taipei has so much to see and explore that those extra minutes quickly add up.

I would also avoid staying near the airport unless you have a very early flight the next morning. While airport hotels can seem convenient, you’ll spend a lot more time commuting into the city and miss out on experiencing Taipei’s neighborhoods after dark.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About Where to Stay in Taipei

What is the best area to stay in Taipei?

For first-time visitors, Zhongzheng is probably the best area to stay in Taipei thanks to its central location, excellent transportation connections, and easy access to the rest of the city. I especially recommend the northern part of the district, close to Zhongshan. A close second is Da’an, which offers a slightly more local atmosphere while still being very well connected by MRT.

Is it worth staying near Taipei Main Station?

Absolutely. Taipei Main Station is one of the most convenient areas in the city, especially if you plan to use public transportation frequently or take day trips to other parts of Taiwan.
You’ll have access to the MRT, regional trains, the High-Speed Rail (HSR), and direct airport connections, making it one of the most practical bases for exploring both Taipei and the rest of the country.

Where should I stay in Taipei on a budget?

If you’re planning a longer stay, Yonghe usually offers better value and a more local experience.
For shorter trips, I would look at capsule hotels and budget accommodations around Taipei Main Station, where you can often find excellent locations without spending a fortune.

What is the safest area in Taipei?

Taipei is widely considered one of the safest cities in Asia.
All of the neighborhoods mentioned in this guide are safe for visitors, including Zhongzheng, Da’an, Ximending, Datong, Xinyi, and Yonghe.
Of course, it’s always important to use common sense and stay aware of your surroundings, just as you would in any major city. That said, Taipei has a very low crime rate and is generally an extremely comfortable destination for travelers.

How many days should you spend in Taipei?

I recommend spending at least 3 to 5 full days in Taipei to explore the city’s main attractions, neighborhoods, night markets, and nearby day trips.
If you enjoy hiking, you may want to add another couple of days. The surrounding New Taipei area offers countless trails, mountain viewpoints, waterfalls, and outdoor adventures that many visitors never get the chance to experience.

Taiwan is one of the most complete and rewarding destinations I’ve visited. Between its culture, food, nature, night markets, and the kindness of its people, it’s the kind of place that deserves more time than most travelers initially plan.
If your schedule allows, I genuinely recommend extending your stay and exploring more of the island.

💁🏽‍♀️ We originally planned to spend just one day in Taiwan during a long layover. Instead, we ended up extending our trip into a 10-day adventure across the island in 2026 before continuing on to Japan and South Korea.

I’m pretty sure you’ll fall in love with Taiwan too.

Maybe our paths will cross somewhere in the world one day.
